I tried to grow beefsteak tomatoes they grew in the first week(germinated)
but within the month they grew tall like nearly a foot in just stems. And
they had the same leaves as they did in first week I ended up just tossing
them out because no progress was being made. Took them out the pots and the
roots EVERYWHERE! What happened? I watered them everyday, sun was more than
plentiful, and checked on them every single day for nearly a month and a
    half.

good video…What do you mean by thinning your cells?

  • Robert Sine says:

Gary, I watched a video from a guy named Praxus. He had 3 seedlings in the
starting cell like you did, and he separated all three by putting the plug
on a bowl of water, so the soil would wash away from each seedling’s
roots. It looked as if that way the roots wouldn’t be damaged at all.
    Very clean and fast.

I plan on using my greenhouse this year instead of my garden (less time
consuming to deal with for me). Anyways, since I will not be doing anything
to elaborate, is it possible to start my seeds in the 5 gallon containers I
plan to use, or is there a reason to use the flats first. Thanks, been
    learning a lot from you!!

  • Sierra Schaffer says:

Hi Gary, I was wondering, when you place all the trays, filled with the
seeds, do you put the lids on the trays, and if so for how long do you leave
the lids on for? Do all your trays sit on warming mats? DO all seeds need
    a warming mat ?
    Thanks for the great videos

  • Steph Zurface says:

do you have to transfer to cups? I plan on starting mine in the seed
starters this weekend and that gives them 6 weeks until I will plant them
outdoors. I’ll start acclimation on week 5. is there any harm in just
leaving them in the seed starters then planting them straight in the
    ground?

  • Mariana Garcia says:

Could I start the seed in the cup and then just tranfer it to a regular pot
    outside?

  • Oki S says:

Hi Gary, what kind of soil mixture are you using to transplant your tomato

  • The Great Tomato Adventure says:

Why not just start them off in the cup so you don’t have to transplant.

  • CanadianRy says:

Once the seedlings come up, how often should they be watered? Should I
continue bottom watering or use a gentle mister from the top when the soil
looks dry? Thanks! Great videos Gary!

  • OlRedd96 says:

Gary, your videos are much appreciated. Could you use this same method for
other vegetables such as cucumbers, squash, zucc, and melons? If you have
covered this question before, could you link me to the video? thanks

tomato in my home. Since I am in saudi arabia, what soil can i use to grow
    tomato indoor. please help me.

  • jesse banke says:

What if i just plant them out in the greenhouse after the 3rd week and
string some burlap across above them about 15″ above the plants. The burlap
would keep most the direct sun off them and still get ambient light on
them. I just put a bunch of seeds in baggies with wet paper towels 3 days
    ago.

My little tomatoes , I planted in the peat pot things, so I don’t have to

third sets of leaves. They r under grow lights..they have the look of frost
    bit. ..the stems r strong and looks good..but leaves r , some r gone..I
feel the leaves will grow back..I also did use miracle grow fert.. On
them..did I mess up, by. doing this…I am sick. The soil is miracle grow.
    I bet I should not have fert. Them..also u r saying water from bottom..I
    didn’t. I did the top..how badly have I screwed up? Can I fix this..like I
said..the stalk or stem looks great..just the leaves look frost bit. Help.

  • TeraNovaProductions says:

when tomato plants get leggy then when you transplant bury the stem up the
the foliage. This improves the plants overall root system and allows the
stem to root. More roots usually = better harvest.

I’m new to this and was wondering… My seedlings have sprouted in a seed
starter with the clear lid, I planted them on the 15th of April and they
have been growing outside under my husband’s boat(always shady) but I don’t
know if I need to harden them since they have been growing outside to begin
with. They are bell peppers and jalapenos . I barely took the lid off of
them today and placed them in a sunny area for an hour but I’m not sure if
im doing it.right. I live in south Florida 30 minutes from the keys to be
exact so cold weather isn’t an.issue here.. help please.

Hi Gary. I was wondering how you bottom water if you start tomatoes
directly into Styrofoam cups. I am only going to have maybe 10 tomato
plants (small space) and won’t go through the bother of transplanting from
    seed cells. Thanks!
